Controversy in the Media: Ethics and Advertising

Should Advertisements Be Politically Fueled?

Over the past couple of years, there has been an increase in corporate social responsibility (CSR) in business both on the back end and the forefront. With this, many companies have taken a stance regarding various social movements.

For example, we saw the Nike ad…

The Dove Real Beauty Campaign…

And the Dawn Dish Soap ad…

These are just a few of many examples of companies taking a stance regarding social movements.

What do I think?

If companies have the power to say something, to spark thought and to generate movement, I think they should.

With that being said, I do not want companies to be hypocritical and act differently behind the scenes than to the public. I think at the bare minimum, striking the conversation is important.

The first time I remember a company taking a stance was when Apple developed their (PRODUCT)RED™campaign to help people suffering from HIV/AIDS in African countries.

With the power that corporations have to spread a message worldwide, I think they should. I am more likely to buy something knowing that the sale is going towards a company that gives back to the community or does research for a cause than one that doesn’t.

Even a small contribution is better than nothing.
